Chapter 01
Understanding the Problem
Why audience growth is harder than it looks, and why traditional approaches stall.
Current industry context
Venues have always been in the audience business, but few describe their audience with a growth model. Visitor counts, ticket sales, and membership numbers are tracked; the underlying audience system that produces them is not.
Why traditional approaches fall short
Acquisition-only strategies produce leaky buckets. Retention-only strategies produce stagnation. Referral-only strategies never begin. Growth requires all four levers working together.
The market context
As audience becomes the most valuable asset a physical location can own, the discipline of growing that audience (not just measuring it) becomes a strategic capability.
